How to Activate Your Windows 11 Product Key
A genuine Windows 11 key unlocks the full operating system — personalization, security updates, and all premium features. Here's how to activate it in a few clicks.
1. Open the Activation settings
Click Start > Settings > System > Activation. If Windows is already installed but not activated, you'll see a message saying so at the top of this page.
2. Enter your product key
- Select Change product key (or Update product key if one is already partially set).
- Type the 25-character key exactly as it appears in your order confirmation — dashes are added automatically.
- Click Next, then follow the prompts. Windows will contact Microsoft's servers to validate the key.
3. Confirm activation
Once activation succeeds, the Activation page will show Windows is activated with a digital license (or similar). This can take a minute — if it doesn't update immediately, restart your PC and check again.
4. Common issues
Keys are typically tied to a single device the first time they're activated. If you're reinstalling Windows on the same PC, activation usually happens automatically once you're signed in — you may not even need to re-enter the key. If you get an error, verify you've typed the key correctly (no O/0 or I/1 mix-ups) and that your PC is connected to the internet, then try again.
